Craig's
Wargaming
Website

Welcome to my site. First of all, a confession ....... I like toy soldiers! Not the old fashioned children's variety that Grandad played with as a lad, but the highly detailed, well designed white metal (lead/tin alloy) miniature sculptures that are available today.

Wargaming's not quite as strange a hobby as it may sound (although my wife might disagree) — there's quite a few of us out there (here?).

I and my ilk generally like collecting (lots & lots of collecting), painting (OK, some don't like painting) and gaming with miniature armies. It's a well known fact that all wargamers collect far more figures than they will ever need or can ever hope to paint. It is strongly believed by all that when you paint all the lead you have you will die. In my case, I think I'll probably live forever (unless my wife reads this!)

My own particular interests lie predominantly in what's known as the "Ancient" period. This covers the period from the very first armies in Mesopotamia in around 3,000 BCE, to the end of the Roman Empire and the start of what's usually called the "Dark Ages". I have occasionally tried other gaming periods, but have invariably returned "back to my roots".

Over recent years, I have almost exclusively used a set of rules called DBM (short for De Bellis Multitudinis) produced by WRG. A link to the website of one of the author's can be found on the links page. In my opinion, they provide an excellent balance between playability and my own perception of how ancient warfare worked.

OK, so what's on the sight apart from all my ramblings? What I want to show are some of the figures from my armies, to describe how I paint them and to look at the "visual" side of wargaming. My painting is generally acknowledged to be quite good (even if I say so myself) and I am keen to pass on to other gamers some of the tricks and techniques I use. Painting figures is NOT an issue of skill, but rather one of thought, organisation and technique. I will demonstrate this on the site. Terrain is also an important aspect that is often overlooked, and I want to show how this can be improved without too much effort.

Enough for now — enjoy the site!
